The famous British telephone booths

ASE is committed to helping all of its students further their understanding and appreciation of the culture in which they are resident. From the moment students arrive, they have the opportunity to immerse themselves in British life. ASE's housing and study centre are located in central Bath within easy walking distance of one another, which ensures routine interaction with the local community. Whether by meeting the neighbours, chatting at the local pub, or socialising at The Venue at Bath University, opportunities for mixing with local people are excellent.

Sipping tea at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-AvonIn addition, ASE's carefully organised itinerary of trips, events, and classes ensures further opportunities for cultural immersion and reflection. During these, the programme's friendly staff offer cultural, social and historical insights and seek to establish a challenging, supportive forum in which students can evaluate their experiences. Students are encouraged to observe differences, to question their assumptions, and to discuss things they have found confusing, interesting or just plain bizarre about British life. What does it mean, for instance, to have a 'chin wag', to be 'gob-smacked' or 'knackered', or to be 'taking a butchers'?
