Bath Cats and Dogs Home (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Bath Cats and Dogs Home is an affiliated branch of the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and is one of the largest re-homing centres in the UK. Over 2,500 animals are sheltered, cared for and re-homed every year by the organization, which is based on the edge of the city of Bath. The intern’s duties will be varied, but are likely to include helping with fundraising and communications - events, PR and media liaison, copywriting, and administration.

Bath Magistrates Court (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

This internship is ideal for any student wishing to get firsthand experience of an integral part of the British judicial system. Through shadowing a legal advisor, witnessing in close-up the workings of a Magistrate’s Court - including criminal trials - and undertaking extensive personal research, the intern will be encouraged to reflect critically on the differences between American and British legal systems. The successful candidate for the placement will be self-motivated, presentable, and have a real interest (and preferably background) in the detailed workings of the law.

The Big Issue Southwest (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Inspired by Street News, the New York street paper, The Big Issue was first launched in the UK in 1991 and is now sold by homeless and vulnerably housed people across the country. A small, dedicated team of full-time employees and volunteers in the Bath office oversees the distribution of the Big Issue Southwest magazine, providing practical and personal support to vendors. Besides working closely with this team in their day-to-day duties, the intern will have an opportunity to help organize fundraising events, develop new services for vendors, and identify fresh business opportunities for the magazine locally. Initiative, good research and report-writing skills, as well as a responsible attitude, and an enthusiasm to work with vulnerable people, are therefore essential.

Black Swan Arts Centre (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Black Swan Arts Centre is a dynamic venue for contemporary arts and crafts, situated in Frome, a small country town approximately 15 miles from Bath. High quality, innovative work is exhibited in two galleries. An extensive education programme includes talks, workshops and residencies linked to exhibitions. The Arts centre also has three craft studios, a café and a craft shop stocking a wide range of original work, including ceramics, jewellery, textiles, wood and metalwork. The internship provides the opportunity to engage with many aspects of work within the centre, including administration and publicity.

City of Bath College - Creative Arts Department (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Two placements are available for students with an interest in Fine Art and Gallery Management. The Fine Art Department delivers a full complement of courses in painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking, including vocational courses leading to Higher Education at degree level. The first placement is offered to a student interested in learning about teaching Art and Design, and offers the opportunity to get involved in the practical aspects of supporting Fine Art courses in studio and workshop environments. The Hot Bath Gallery runs a broad programme of international and local exhibitions across the Arts, Media and Education. This internship involves working with CSRnetwork, a leading social and environmental management consultancy. The company is based in Bath and advises large, multinational companies on corporate social responsibility issues. The team helps to develop and implement strategies, write reports and audit performance. Recent projects have ranged from designing stakeholder engagement guidelines for Vodafone to writing Toyota's North American environmental report. Founded in 2002, Faragher Jones is a small, independent publishing house in central Bath, committed to ethical publishing and with a vested interest in Fairtrade and Green issues. The company publishes everything from bi-monthly videogame magazines for CHIPS and ePlay to Fairtrade directories and offbeat travel guides to the city. Staff members are involved in various parts of the publishing process, including design, copywriting and advertising. Applicants should be self-motivated, confident, willing to do independent research and copywriting, and interested in honing their writing skills in a friendly, passionate work environment.

Footprint is a small publishing house based in central Bath. They produce over 100 travel guides to around 150 destinations around the world aimed at the independent traveller: their competitors are Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Let’s Go. Their small team of full-time staff in Bath deals with everything from the initial conception of the guides to the finely detailed cartography, though the intern's work and research is likely to be centred on marketing. Applicants should be highly-motivated, computer savvy, confident with language, ready to turn their hands to a variety of office-based tasks, and passionate about publishing and travel.

The Holburne Museum of Art (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Bath’s museum of decorative arts and crafts offers a placement working alongside museum staff on a variety of projects. Typically, there will be extensive opportunities for the intern to liaise with local schools and colleges through the museum’s Education department, and to help produce the museum's promotional materials, as well as additional work assisting in the setting up of special exhibitions or the maintenance of the permanent one. The Jane Austen Centre (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Giving a presentation to visitors a the Jane Austen CentreSituated in an elegant Georgian town house in the centre of the City, the Jane Austen Centre houses a permanent exhibition which tells the story of Jane Austen’s brief but eventful stay in Bath. The Centre offers internships to enthusiastic and motivated students who, besides being involved in the day to day running of the centre, will have the opportunity to research the period of Jane Austen’s time in Bath (1801-6). This internship is likely to be of particular interest to literature, history or art students, and the successful candidate will be expected to take the Jane Austen seminar course, if offered, as well as to have read Austen’s two Bath novels (Persuasion and Northanger Abbey) before arrival.

Julian House Homeless Shelter (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

This internship offers the opportunity to gain an insight into the complex issues relating to homelessness. Julian House is the leading provider of services to homeless and vulnerably- housed men and women in the region. In addition to its respite facilities the charity also manages several supported housing projects and other specialist services. In addition to seeing and sharing the organization’s work at first hand, there may also be opportunities to experience other strands of the charity’s work, including marketing, life skills training, mentoring and project management. Manvers Street Baptist Church / Open House Centre (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

This internship offers the chance to be immersed in probably the most successful city centre church outreach engagement of its type in England. The people we help include parents with babies and under-threes, people with anxiety and learning difficulties, young people, and those who seem excluded from most social provision. You will work at the interface between the church/Christian faith and the issues facing those who live and work in, or visit Bath city centre, becoming a part of this community. Museum of Bath at Work (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

The Museum of Bath at Work aims both to complement and act as a counterpoint to the many heritage attractions of the city, charting Bath’s fascinating commercial and industrial history, its development as a manufacturing centre as well as a tourist destination. Permanent collections include the contents of a local engineering firm, a hardware shop, a Victorian soft drinks factory, and Bath Stone mine. The museum also has a lively educational programme for schools and colleges, presenting regular lectures, dayschools and workshops. Besides general experience of a heritage attraction, including exhibition preparation, liaison with schools, archival research etc. the placement offers the chance to work on 'behind the scenes' collections management projects.

Theatre Royal Bath (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Working a Theatre Royal eventThe Egg, the brand new theatre space at the Theatre Royal Bath, is dedicated exclusively to youth drama. Successful candidates for this internship will get to work with practitioners who produce young people’s theatre, run workshops and festivals and work actively with local schools and youth groups to engage children and young people in the running of the theatre. Applicants should therefore have particular interest in young people's theatre, and preferably knowledge and experience of either theatre design, backstage skills, working with young people, marketing or directing. Opportunities may also be available to work in the administration wing of the theatre, and to assist with productions in the theatre’s Main House or Ustinov Studio.

Watson, Bertram and Fell, Architects (internship) [Autumn & Spring]

Architecture Intern at the officeThis internship is open to Architectural Studies majors and offers them the opportunity to work in some of Bath's most prestigious architects' design studios, guided by an architect within each practice. Here students will learn about the issues of restoration, planning and development as they relate to Bath in its unique position as a World Heritage City and home to some of the finest eighteenth-century architecture and Roman remains in England.
