About this course

What is consciousness? Who has it? Where is it? Is there a mind/body distinction?

These questions have a long history and they continue today in the midst of advances in neuroscience and shifts in cultural imagination. This course will examine philosophical theories of consciousness, recent scientific developments, and ethical challenges, in relations to transhumanism and mind uploading, animal cognition, artificial intelligence, the end of life, and posthuman biotechnology. Readings will include Descartes, Hume, James, Wittgenstein, Dennett, Searles, Fukyama, Harroway, and some science fiction short stories.

No previous philosophical or scientific background is required.
