British Musical Theatre from ‘My Fair Lady’ to ‘Matilda’

  • Advanced Studies in England Nelson House, 2 Pierrepont Street Bath, England, BA1 1LB United Kingdom (map)

This seminar offers an intensive, critical introduction to the history and evolution of British musical theatre, focusing on the post-1950s period and the establishment of the West End as a global powerhouse.

We will examine how the British tradition developed distinct aesthetics, narratives, and commercial models, often in conversation with the American (Broadway) stage. The course will explore key British contributions, from pivotal early-period shows such as Oliver! and My Fair Lady, through iconic ‘megamusicals’ like The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, to contemporary, critically acclaimed works such as Billy Elliot, Matilda, and SIX.

Through in-depth case studies and critical analyses of screen adaptations, we will analyse the formal components of the musical (music, lyrics, book, choreography). We will also consider the musical’s response to major cultural and historical shifts, paying particular attention to the exploration of race, gender, class, and sexuality within the British theatrical context.

The seminar includes a trip to London, for a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the capital’s most beautiful, historic theatres, and - of course! - to see a live production in the West End.
