Intercultural Literacy Award
The Intercultural Literacy Award (ILA) encourages ASE students to connect as fully as possible with the Bath community.
The Intercultural Literacy Award (ILA) seeks to balance the students' academic experiences with equally engaging and challenging opportunities for cross-cultural learning.
Students who enrol in the ILA are expected to be enthusiastic about participating in both ASE-organised and community-run activities in the Bath area. Those who participate should also be prepared to reflect analytically on their cultural experiences and to engage in discussions in the provided forums.
Why participate in the CCE?
Students who participate in the ILA generally gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the wider Bath community; often make more connections with local residents and fellow students; and typically develop a more reflective approach to their study abroad experience.
The award is recorded on the student's ASE transcript, and can be a valuable entry on a resumé, as employers increasingly look to hire ‘global citizens’.
How does it work?
Successful ILA participants receive the award based on the extent and quality of their achievement in four interconnected areas:
Participation in community-based events and activities
Attendance at four ASE-run ILA sessions or events
Ongoing reflection on events and activities that have shaped their understanding of the host culture
Submission of reflective work - whether writing, a photo-essay, a blog, vlog, or digital storytelling project

“ASE made it easy to make connections outside the program. I joined the Bath Choral Society and met so many great people.”
